Tips for Improving Memory and Concentration

You might be searching some really helpful tips for improving memory and concentration and must also be thinking that why you only forget things, places, names or why aren't you able to memorize your lessens effectively? But let me tell you, it is not only you but a major chunk of population who suffers from loss of memory and concentration. There are many reasons for this. I will quote some of these reason (you might find them very “so-out-of-place” types reasons but they are today's truth) And make it clear that I am writing reasons of 'bad memory' and 'poor concentration' just because when I give you tips to improve memory, you should not feel that they are total non sense! So, here are some reasons for poor memory and concentration.

Lesser Use of Brain- We use calculators for even simple calculations, we do not entertain ourselves with puzzles, crosswords (but watch TV- a total 'mind less' activity that doesn't engage your mind at all except for those 'sensible enough' quiz programmes). There's a simple rule - “use it or lose it”- when we are not using our memory, we are losing it!

Poor Diet Habits- At younger ages, we do not realize the importance of food. But just think, if a car doesn't run due to lack of fuel how can your body and mind run with nutrients' deficiency? Mind too needs its share of fuel and that is not junk foods in anyway.

Lack of Attention- Have you ever thought why you are able to repeat the whole story of that movie you watched last week (with minor details, remind you!) but could not recall what your professor taught you in the class today morning? Its just because you pay attention to movie and not to the lecture of your professor (and then you blame your poor concentration and look everywhere for tips to improve memory!)

But then that is also a good sign that you have realized you need memory improvement. Here are some ways to improve memory and concentration. These are all practical ways of improving memory and concentration provided you take them seriously and follow them, however, absurd they seem to be at the first instance

Do Memory Exercise for Improving Memory

Work out your brain more, perform memory exercises. You need not search for any memory exercise, just do everyday work in novel ways to present challenges to your mind or learn some altogether different thing- a language, a task, a game, a cooking recipe- anything but it should be new to your mind
  • Brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand
  • Do “neurobic” exercise (aerobic exercise for your brain) like showering and getting dressed with your eyes closed.
  • Enroll yourself on a course in a subject you don’t know much about
These were only some examples, think of some other exclusive memory exercises tailored to your needs.

Adopt Healthy Habits for Improving Memory

These healthy habits are mostly those that are essential to keep our body going (brain is after all a part of our “so-loved-but-neglected-body”)

Exercise regularly. It increases oxygen to your brain; reduces the risk for disorders that might result into memory loss; enhance the effects of helpful brain chemicals and protect brain cells; and manage stress.

Sleep Tight. It is necessary for memory consolidation. Sleep disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea make you tired and unable to concentrate during the day. Get medical help if you suffer from serious sleep disorders.

Quit Smoking. It increases the risk of vascular disorders that can cause stroke and constrict arteries that deliver oxygen to the brain.

Get Right Nutrition for Memory Improvement

Diet is also key to improving memory along with keeping your body healthy. Many researches state that certain nutrients nurture and stimulate brain function. I'll tell you what nutrients to look for in food without going into technical details about how they help you to improve memory concentration, but they do help. Find out and take foods that contain

  • B vitamins, especially B6, B12, and folic acid (sources: spinach and other dark leafy greens, broccoli, asparagus, strawberries, melons, black beans and other legumes, citrus fruits, soybeans.)
  • Antioxidants like vitamins C and E, and beta carotene (sources: blueberries and other berries, sweet potatoes, red tomatoes, spinach, broccoli, green tea, nuts and seeds, citrus fruits, liver.)
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (sources: cold-water fish such as salmon, herring, tuna, halibut, and mackerel; walnuts and walnut oil; flaxseed and flaxseed oil)
Senior persons should have dietary supplement for B12 and folic acid.Omega-3 supplement can be had by people of any age (if they don’t like eating fish.) However, nutrients work best when they are consumed in foods.

The most important thing- pay attention to every thing that you do- read, listen, memorize, see- whatever you do because at most of the time when we think that we suffer from poor memory concentration, we actually pay less attention to everything. Just be attentive to check whether you really need to improve your memory!
